Computers for Kids

Computers for Kids (Michigan)

The Computers For Kids Michigan website is dedicated to distributing used computer equipment and peripherals to children who would otherwise not have the means to acquire this equipment. This organization receives donations of used equipment, then refurbishes what it can, and recycles or responsibly disposes of items that cannot be refurbished.

The owners of this website have retired and have asked that it be deactivated.

Michigan Silver Exchange

Michigan Silver Exchange was created to extract silver from items such as circuit boards and photo film processing chemicals so it would not find its way into landfills.  You could call them an early pioneer in the fight to save our environment, since they started their mission in the late 1970’s.

The original owners have recently retired and sold their business, so their website is no longer active.

Shanfields-Meyers Jewellery & China Shop

Shanfields-Meyers Jewellery & China Shop – 2011

Shanfields-Meyers Jewellery & China Shop had used the same website for nearly a decade, with no changes!  This complete redesign focuses on interactive e-commerce capabilities and inventory search.  Multiple templates were created to match the “mood” of the season. Shown here is the original template, not customized for any season.

Tichelworld

TichelWorld

This website was created from a basic template in less than one man-week using photographs and product information provided by the client. A requirement was that Paypal be used as the fulfillment mechanism, both for payment processing and inventory control.

In addition to site design, JEM Software was responsible for setting up the interface with Paypal, and for defining initial inventory levels.

Finally, JEM Software set up appropriate key words that ranked this site highly in search engines; and monitored shopper’s search terms to determine whether changes needed to be made to the search engine optimization.

The owners of TichelWorld have retired.

TMJ Ortho Centre

TMJ Orthocentre – 2011

At its core, this website uses the Joomla content management system. However, the template used for this website was unable to properly display the drop down menus in the manner required, so the template contains some custom modifications.

Other custom modifications include the image header, which was scraped from the original version of the tmjorthcentre.com website, and then edited to meet the requirements of the template’s image size; and the individual articles, which needed to be retrieved from the original, non-Joomla hosting platform, and in some cases reworked to present the data in an easier to navigate format.

Safe and Secure Computing - version 2

Safe and Secure Computing – 2010

The first redesign of Safe and Secure Computing was built using a web-design package, using elements of the design of the original website. The intent was to modernize the original version without a wholesale reconstruction.

By using all of the previous graphic elements, the current site looks very much like the original with one major exception… the new version’s pages are all bounded by frames, so that the main body of the website (header and navigation elements) are in fixed positions, and do not change, regardless of the length of the content contained on the page.

Shaarey Zedek Windsor v2.0

Congregation Shaarey Zedek – 2009

This is a redesign of the original Shaarey Zedek website created in 2006. This redesign employs the Joomla CMS system with a few custom-designed PHP modules.

There is a page on the website where candle-lighting times for the year are displayed. This page was generated by an off-line custom-written application created by JEM Software.

This website uses interfaces to Google Maps and Paypal; as well as several PHP modules purpose-built for this client.

Management of Wealth

Management of Wealth

The original Management of Wealth website had been hosted with a different hosting company, although they had been using the WordPress content management system for their presentation.

JEM Software decided to retain the WordPress platform because of its wide acceptance, and because the original website nearly had all the desired functionality.

After migrating the website to the new hosting company, some upgrades were made to the template and features to achieve the client’s desired effect.

This website is no longer online, since the domain name has been sold to a different owner.

I Love My Books

I Love My Books

This very basic website was quickly created using default templates and default artwork from a web-design software product. The client wanted to have a working website in a single work session, so we sat together, found stock art on the internet, and quickly pasted together a website that would be operational in a matter of hours.

The main feature that allows this basic website to be memorable is the “intelligent” integration of email subscription registration forms into the design. Since the popup email subscription registration request resides on multiple pages of the website, JEM Software had to devise a way that would prevent the popup from appearing if the website visitor had already signed up for the subscription on a prior page.

Original Shaarey Zedek Windsor

Congregation Shaarey Zedek – 2006

The original Shaarey Zedek Windsor website was hand coded in HTML and was difficult to maintain due to the inconsistent rendering when using different browsers.

Updates were extremely labour intensive, since the stories had to be merged into existing pages, and were not simply taken from a story repository, as is done with modern-day content management systems.
